Maurice Ravel has recently consumed all vacancy in my musical obsession. I’m surprised to find myself in an expressionist’s mindset. How could that be? Perhaps it’s my quiet mornings spent overlooking the park these past few weeks. Or my unearned, lifelong nostalgia for all things French.
This one track in particular–Jeux D’eau–it’s gorgeous. It translates to something like ‘playing water’. I could listen to it on repeat and never bore. His other solo piano works enthrall me similarly, but none more than this. At least for the moment.
Enjoy this piece as recorded by the great Lebanese pianist Abdel Rahman el Bacha. If you like it, I suggest his album of Ravel’s Complete Piano Solo Works.
