Sam Maloof died at his home today (1916-2009). This exceptional woodworker is best know for his exquisite rocking chairs, and was the first designer to receive a MacArthur ‘Genius’ award (1985). The Smithsonian Institution describes him as “America’s most renowned contemporary furniture craftsman”. With the increasing convergence of eco-friendliness and good design, Maloof sets an impressive example for the power that traditional materials still hold.
For those wondering who might fill this void, I suggest the work of Edward Wohl, a student and friend of Sam’s, and a master designer in his own right.
