The Slow Inevitable Death of American Muscle by Jonathan Schipper
Slow Motion Car Crash
Last week my friend Eduardo and I paid a visit to the Pierogi Gallery here in Brooklyn, which just recently opened their new Boiler space to accommodate larger-scale installations. What we found was one of the best pieces I’ve seen since the TBA festival in PDX last year. From Pierogi’s site:
This sculpture is a machine that advances two full sized automobiles slowly into one another, simulating a head on automobile collision. The gear system can be adjusted so that the crash occurs over the period of a few days, up to one year or more. The movement can be made so slow as to be invisible.
Unfortunately the cars were already complete crashed by the time we arrived, but I’m told the two cars had been crashed slowly over the course of 40 days.
Oh American Muscle Machines, why are you so close to my heart?
